Protein and many other protein-based products like our Protein Oats, Protein Pancakes, Mug Cakes and Whey Hot are best enjoyed as per the directions on the back of the packet. However we still, quite often receive feedback about certain products that you don’t find overly pleasing as directed.

So assuming you measure out and weigh your liquids and powders spot on, there are just a few other factors that might be the reason for your trouble.

Trouble shooting a Protein Shake

This goes for all of our shakes including WPI, WPC, Earth Protein, Total Meal Replacement, Muscle Food 101, Thermowhey and Protein Matrix. We recommend using 300ml of water to 30g of protein powder (unless otherwise stated).

So here are some common issues and how you can work to resolve them.

My shake is lumpy

Consider how you are mixing it. If you’re mixing your protein with a glass and a spoon, this will eventually work, but we recommend for the most effective mix using a shaker, agitator and the recommended serving size.

Then the water temperature may be the culprit. Super chilled water can make a shake a bit harder to dissolve. So try mixing it first with some regular temperature water and then topping it with chilled water or filling it with ice cubes.

My shake isn’t strong enough

It always comes back to the directions. Did you mix it with the recommended amount of water? Adding more liquid will certainly dilute and weaken the concentration of your protein, so try reducing it.

Then consider your taste in general, maybe you love strong, intense dark chocolate? So you may find a standard chocolate protein serve to be weak compared to others. Try reducing the water content, adding some cocoa or add another scoop of protein!

My shake gives me an upset tummy

If you’re lactose intolerant or avoid lactose in general and decided you would drink WPC or another whey based protein, it’s likely this is the culprit. Try switching to Protein Matrix which contains the lactose enzyme for easy digestion or swapping to a non dairy based source like Earth Protein or Future Whey.

Trouble shooting Quick Protein Pancakes

Sticking pancakes, uncooked, rubbery or too thin… Depending on what you like, an awful lot can go wrong in the making. But all issues are quite simple to fix.

We’ll help you make the perfect protein pancakes.

My pancakes are sticking to the pan

Yes, it says non-stick, but I tend not to trust this. Just give your pan a slight spray of oil or an even coat of butter or coconut oil and you should be very happy. You are naturally going to have much more trouble with sticking with an old pan, so it might be time to reinvest anyway.

My pancakes aren’t cooked through

Sure the top might be set, you flip, it’s golden and you serve… However the middle is still gooey! It’s likely your pan temperature is just a fraction too high and so the heat just doesn’t get right through.

Try lowering the temperature and as hard as it is to be patient for your pancakes, you have to be… Otherwise just think of your pancakes as molten lava pancakes with cookie dough!

My pancakes are burning before the top sets

This is the same rule as above. The temperature on your pan is far too hot. We recommend a low to medium heat to ensure your pancakes are golden and cooked through. It’s okay, the first pancake you cook is normally a dud!

My pancakes are rubbery

Then you probably cooked them for too long. If you’re a fiend for cooking and multitasking, this one is easy to accidentally do. Just keep an eye on them, they don’t need to be cooked forever.

My pancakes are too thick or too thin

The thickness of your mix is to do with your liquid content. If you haven’t added enough liquid you might be making piklets, if you’ve added too much liquid you might have a crepe.

They are both yummy, but if you’re after pancakes add a little more water to accommodate a thick mix, or add a tablespoon of flour or protein powder for a runny mix. You will also find that with standing time your mix will thicken. So leave for 3-5 minutes before you start adjusting ingredients, just in case.

Trouble shooting Quick Protein Oats

Protein Oats are dependent on cooking in your microwave, which means they solely rely on your own device settings. It’s important to cook on ‘high’ when the directions tell you to, and if you’re not sure what your microwave cooks like, perhaps cook a little under the allocated time, check, then cook a little more.

Here’s how to perfect our protein oats.

My oats are gluggy

Over cooking any oats will make them a thick mix that you can stand your spoon up in. To prevent this, it’s important to cook for the recommended time or just under if you have a strong microwave. You could also opt to add more liquid at the start of the cooking process and if you haven’t cooked them too far, you can rectify your oats by adding more water or milk after cooking and stirring through.

My oats boiled over

When you put your bowl in the microwave, was it so full that you had to be careful you kept it level? You might need to get a bigger bowl. Not only do oats expand as they cook, they can bubble a bit as they release hot air. So switch to a bigger bowl.

My oats are too runny

Similar to ‘gluggly’ oats, your microwave may be a bit weaker in power than the alternative of overcooking and having a strong one!

Try cooking for a bit longer at 20 second intervals. Also worth considering is if you interrupted the cooking numerous times to check. If you do this you will let all the hot air out and delay cooking, so just let it work its magic.

If you use chilled cold water or milk as appose to general tap/room temperature liquid you may also need a little longer as the liquid will take longer to reach a higher temperature and start the cooking process.

Trouble Shooting Whey Hot

Not much can go wrong with Whey Hot, but if you don’t follow the directions, we guarantee you will think you have a dud product.

Here’s how to make the perfect Whey Hot!

My Whey Hot has clumps

When making your Whey Hot, you must first mix in some cooler water and whisk intensely, before adding hot water. If you didn’t add enough cool water and your powder/liquid base is more of a soft protein ball than a runny sauce, it may be quiet hard to break up when you add boiling water and stir. Thus ensure it’s a sauce consistency before adding boiling water.

My Whey Hot is rubbery

Following the point above, you MUST add cooler water before you add boiling water to your protein powder. Why? Because the boiling water seems to cook the protein, sealing it and making it impossible to dissolve and you will have rubbery clumps. It’s just one more step to the process, but a vital one.

Trouble Shooting Mug Cakes

Much like our Protein Oats, Mug Cakes are hard to mess up. The main concern is that your microwave temperature varies and so you may need to adjust the cooking time accordingly.

My Mug Cake has no sauce

Just like oats, this can depend on your microwave temperature. If your microwave is super powerful, we recommend less cooking time, or more liquid (20mls more).

It may also be your mug. If it’s already hot, your mix will reach temperature and start cooking sooner. The same goes for the liquid you add in.

My Mug Cake isn’t cooked enough

This is better than overcooking it, which is pretty difficult to come back from. Just place back in the microwave and cook on intervals of 15 seconds until your cake is tasty and cooked. As opposed to overcooking, it’s likely your microwave, cup or liquid was too cool to begin with.
