Many people are hesitant to go on holidays as they are afraid of breaking their routine and undoing all of their hard work.

I can relate to this from my own experiences. But holidays are meant to be enjoyed and it is definitely possible to relax, have fun and avoid putting on unwanted weight, without the need to count calories. For me, it is all about making smart food choices and exercising daily.

While currently travelling, I have been lenient with my food and have allowed myself to eat what I please – although that doesn’t mean I eat a pizza every night.

I opt for healthy foods which I enjoy eating and make me feel good. I also try and do some form of physical activity every day. Whether it’s going for a walk, participating in gym classes or doing a weights session.

Working out and eating healthy has become a part of my lifestyle; I enjoy it and it makes me happy. For some, I understand it can be quite daunting, especially when all-you-can-eat breakfast buffets are involved!  That is why I have decided to share some of my top travel tips for keeping healthy while abroad.

My top ten tips to succeed

  1. Stick to lean protein sources such as chicken or fish each meal. Go for grilled meats, not deep fried. I also have a protein shake daily, mainly post workout to make sure I am getting enough protein in for the day.
  2. Try and have a big serving of salad or vegetables with meals. Veggies are low in calories, so you can eat a large amount and feel fuller for longer.
  3. Opt for healthier choices at buffets. For breakfast I always go for an omelette, simple carbohydrates and some fruit.
  4. Ask for salad dressings and sauces on the side. Dressings can add a lot of extra calories and this way you can self serve.
  5. For me, I would rather eat my calories than drink them. Alcohol is high in calories. I love a cocktail here and there, but food always wins for me! I like to sip on my Bulk Nutrients BCAAs throughout the day to curb my sweet cravings and avoid sweet drinks such as soft drinks and juices.
  6. Pre-plan meal spots for the day. Look up restaurants on Instagram and suss out the menu prior to going. This will help avoid making poor, spur of the moment choices when you’re hungry throughout the day!
  7. Keep hydrated. Drink lots of water throughout the day, especially if you’re doing lots of walking and in a hot country.
  8. Consume high carb meals in the morning or pre/post training. These are the times when your body will utilise and burn carbs the most.
  9. Exercise daily. Even if it’s going for a walk, or doing a quick weight session. Try and fit some exercise into your morning – then you have the rest of the day to explore and relax.
  10. Include some elements from your usual diet. I packed my Bulk Nutrients Whey Protein Isolate and BCAAs, as well as some rice cakes and protein bars for snacking.

But most importantly, enjoy yourself! Holidays are made for relaxing and eating; all you have to do is be smart about your decisions! Don’t over think it, just make sensible choices… You’re on a holiday after all!
