Probably the most ubiquitous nutrition supplement is the trusty old protein shaker!

Whether you’re a bodybuilder, an endurance athlete or just on a healthy kick, a protein shaker is something you’ll use everyday to mix your trusty post-workout shakes or smoothies.

Incorporating a ‘magic’ blender ball, protein shakers ensure your workout powder of choice gets properly mixed without clumps or lumps. Given how much (ab)use your protein shaker gets, this blog will teach you how to best keep your protein shaker clean!

Keeping it clean

Nearly everyone has suffered from the dreaded protein shake stink! You know what I’m talking about: That horrible pungent stench you get after forgetting to wash out the remnants of your last shake!

The longer you leave it, the worse it gets, with the stench multiplying exponentially if you leave said dirty protein shaker in the sun and/or in a hot car!

So, to keep your protein shaker clean, follow these simple steps.

There’s nothing worse than a sandy shaker. Don’t be a grub. Keep it clean.

Step #1 – Be clean… always

Clean your protein shaker immediately after use!

A good solid rinse in hot soapy water post-shake will eliminate any future problems. Now, if you’ve left it a few hours before cleaning your shaker and a solid hot water rinse doesn’t remove the stench, you’ll need to progress to Step #2.

Step #2 – The vanilla solution

Give the shaker a solid wash in hot soapy weather, rinse, dry, then add 3-5 drops of vanilla essence, close the lid, shake and then leave for 30-60 minutes.

This does the trick 95% of the time as vanilla essence is quite magical in eliminating nearly all odours! If this doesn’t do the trick, then you’ll need to go to Step #3.

Step #3 – Practice makes perfect

Repeat Step #2, but this time put the shaker in the freezer with the lid on but cap open, leaving in the freezer for 1-3 hours.

This does the trick in 99% of the cases. If this still hasn’t worked, then you’ll need to proceed to the last resort of Step #4.

Shakers make the ultimate travel companion. Until you leave them in the car for a few days…

Step #4 – The deep freeze

Repeat Step #3, but leave in the freezer overnight.

If you awake the following day and the stench still hasn’t been neutralised, then clearly your shaker is now toxic and it’s time to get rid of it . Thus leading you to complete Step #5.

Step #5 – The last resort
