What is a pedometer?

A pedometer is a device which counts each step a person takes by detecting the motion of a person’s hips. It is a tool to help increase your physical activity and motivate you to achieve your results. When activity levels are low, it is one of the best tools to monitor your progress.

Walking is one of the easiest ways to get in exercise and increase your daily energy expenditure. A total of 10,000 steps per days are recommended in adopting a healthy, active lifestyle. This number is the common benchmark set by many health professionals.

While a pedometer is a great motivational tool, when combined with specific health and fitness goals you have the recipe for success. They are low profile, convenient, inexpensive and user friendly. Increased activity encourages the development of muscle strength and endurance and also aids with symptoms of depression by helping to elevate mood.

Do you utilise a pedometer or fitness tracker?

Different types of pedometers

Pedometers can come in various forms but all do relatively the same thing. As the distance of each persons step varies an informal calibration is required and this will be explained with the particular device you choose to use.

In a recent study, 400 women were given pedometers with the daily goal of 10,000 steps and after eight weeks women reported increased energy, less frequent illness and weight loss.

Kimberley George

After having my two beautiful daughters I embarked on a journey to lose over 30kg. As a result I fell in love with helping mothers find a healthy well balanced lifestyle whilst raising a family. For the past five years I have coached women face to face and online, as well as developed an online resource tool to help educate women on healthy lifestyle principles.

First and foremost I love empowering and educating women, allowing them to gain control of their own health and fitness journey. I believe the key to success is to develop lifelong healthy eating habits along with a fitness regime that becomes part of your everyday life!
